He’s our friend and the Residence Hall Director Fellow here at the Emory Alumni Association, but on the course he’s just Byron Liu 12C, champion Ultimate Frisbee player. Alumnus Sam Gainer 06Ox 09C is his teammate.
“Ultimate Frisbee made my Emory years a lot richer and more enjoyable,” Gainer says. “I started out playing basketball at Oxford College. When I transferred, I wanted a change. Ultimate Frisbee incorporated the technical skills and training that I’d gained while training and playing with Oxford Basketball.”
As a player for Atlanta’s Chain Lightning team, Liu and fellow alumni enjoy friendly rivalry with Emory’s traveling college all-star team. Each year, Chain Lightning rises through the ranks nationally. The team took home the national championship title in 2009.
Gainer points out that many “players have moved to Atlanta to play for Chain who are now attaining their post-graduate degrees at Emory. It’s strengthened our team having Emory University such a part of the community.” With a laugh, he observes, “We have a really high IQ on the team.”
